I read this FANTASTICLY FUNNY *LAWYER'S* blog.  Yes, an attorney who is funny.
Who knew?

The other day she wrote a blog about good things that people do and it reminded me of a time when I was pregnant.  Yes, I had to go back a few years for a GREAT example, but it was a really scary time for me...

I got HIT driving home from work by a security truck.  I was 36 weeks pregnant and the other driver turned left without a green arrow and SMASHED right into me.

side note: I was just recounting this story to my friends over our New Year's trip snowmobiling.  Would you believe it - of the four women who had babies ALL of us were hit by other drivers when we were about 25-35 weeks pregnant?  HELLO PEOPLE WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING!!!!  I know for a fact two of us were hit by MALE drivers.

The corner where I was hit was very close to a mission for homeless singles and a home for homeless families.  The SECURITY GUARD who hit me never got out of his car to see if I was okay.  I in fact stayed in the car because I was so.freaked.out!

Was my baby okay?  Damn, he hit me hard!

Another driver who saw the whole thing came to my window and gave me his name and number to be a witness & make sure I was okay.  I started crying and told him I was pregnant.

"WHOAH!  You sure are."  he said then he called 911 and told them to send an ambulance to check on me.

Then as I waited for what seemed like FOREVER.  Homeless person after homeless person came by and up to the window.  Are you okay?  Do you need help?  And when they found I was pregnant one of them went over and TOLD the security guard.

"Do you KNOW you hit a pregnant woman?  ARE YOU WORRIED about her and her BABY?"

He did not move...I kind of felt bad, but seriously?  He was wrong and should have come to see if I were okay in the first place.

So Okay, the bad part was the crash and the driver.  But the good part?

The driver who stopped.  He was on his way home from work like I was; and there were many others at this intersection.  But HE stopped, got pen and paper, gave me his contact information to be a witness, called 911 and offered to sit with me until help came.  He did not have to do that - you know how it is on the way home.  You just want to get home!

The homeless people.  It was DANG cold and they stopped to check on me on their way to get a warm spot at the shelter, delaying their warm meal to make sure a fellow human was fine.

I was really grateful for them.  I was scared and they made me feel better!

And of course, everything was okay.  Boo Boo La La is here, isn't she?  ;)

People are funny...

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

People are funny when they try to "traffic shame" you with a honk. I could CARE LESS if you "think" that I did something "wrong".

notice all the "quotes" today - it is that kind of day.

Anyway I was driving south on 35E this morning when I decided to get over in the far left lane from the middle - the truck in front of me kept slowing down....

I put on my turn signal - pause - look over my shoulder - there is plenty of room, so I pull over.

Kenny Rogers in the Toyota behind me HONKS - about 10 seconds after I pulled into the lane.

How did I know it was "Kenny"?
I saw him WAAAAY behind me, like about 10 car lengths and kind of laughed because he HAD "honked" at me - then pulled in front of the annoying truck that had been using "average speed" as his speed limit - and "Kenny" speeds up like a bat out of hell - apparently - because I suddenly "feel" that there is a car driving by my side and look over...
"Kenny" is WAGGING HIS FINGER AT ME. Like "tsk tsk little lady".
Ummm...WTF? I laughed -visibly- and waved at him. Really, just waved and laughed. He took off then and went to the place where old dudes who look like Kenny Rogers go...(f-er!)

I was calling a cab to fly to JFK that morning. I had a suitcase and was headed to meetings with my two biggest clients - and having dinner with my friend Angie and her daughter at my hotel in New Jersey later that night. We were going to have a sleep-over...

I did not have a cell phone at the time - yes, seriously - and my girlfriend was watching the planes in horror and desperately calling my home every 30 minutes to be sure I was not on either of the planes. And frantically calling her husband of Middle Eastern descent who was stuck now in Germany for about two months...luckily his brother lives there and his parents in France.

My brother came to my house and like zombies we watched CNN for hours and hours. He slept on my couch as we waited to hear what happened. And I for news about a friend who's law firm was located in the towers. He was in court - thankfully.

For a time I worked for American Express and it is scary even today to be up in their tower on Vesey Street and look out at where ground zero is...many people who I got to know well had stories about what it was like to be in NYC that day and the months after.

So how do you remember 9/11? Let me make a suggestion or two:

  • Hug all your friends and family today and tell them how much you care.
  • Be kind to a stranger.
  • Enjoy the freedom you have to love or hate your government and how they run our country.
  • Think about where you were then, and how you have grown now.
  • Stop for a moment of silence and remember those who left us on 9/11.

Peace,

Lisa

p.s. I love you guys.

I was going through old magazines over the weekend and saw this cool handbag - cutout the picture and today went in search of the website that sold it...guess what?

They have a cool giveaway right now, up to $60 in coupons to shop at their website with...they also have apparel, cool baby-toddler-kid items, bath products, and SO MUCH MORE!!! All you have to do is turn in a new or gently used handbag or two...

You can BET MONEY I will be digging out old purses tonight! I know there is a Liz and a DKNY in some lucky ladies future....
