http://www.mamakatslosinit.com/ for Writer's Workshop, m'kay?
Hey There Boo Boo La La,

You are now 16 and a handful for your ancient parents. T-Bone is 60 and me, well I am now 54 ...older than I was when you were born sweetie.

Can you cut your old mom & dad a break and not crash a car until we are in the retirement home?  Or at least until you actually own you OWN car.  Okay?  Pretty please?

Dad thinks that I am going to be "easy" on you because you are my only biological child.  He thought I was harsh on J-Dogg and Sair, or I thought they should be punished more than they were sometimes.

Let me tell you this one time and one time only.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

You know Grandpa Lowell?  Remember he was MY dad?  Yeah, well we did not get away with
A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G.
with him.
Nada, Zilch, Zippo.

Neither will you.

Boyfriend dump you?  Get to school.
Bad grades?  Your grounded.
Messy Room?  Not on my watch!
Brought home by the police?  HOLY HELL that better not happen!  Mama will NOT be as cool as Grandpa was when this happend with your Uncle.  (I think grounded until graduation or receipt of admission letter with full scholarship to Harvard, or similar, would be in order.)

In short, I am your MOTHER.  Not your friend.

As such you will follow the rules, there are not many so don't freak out here, and do well in school.

THAT is your job!

Got it?

However, as your mother, I also reserve the right to stick up for you with teachers & principal's, kiss you on the head, give you squeezy hugs, wipe your tears, help you with homework, tell you that your friends are wrong - you are cool, etc.

I got your back like that.

Hugs and Kisses,
MommyLisa

I just did the math, and I'll be 54 years young when my youngest is 16, too. Yikes! Love your letter...I definitely want to be my daughters' MOTHER, not their friend! But I'll always love them more than anyone else! (except maybe their daddy)

Now that's the perfect definition of a mom!

Well AMEN! I'm so glad to hear a parent talk like a parent and NOT a friend! Great job!

I CANNOT get over the awesomeness that is that picture. That's just epic. She almost looks 16 right there!

Sounds like my upbringing exactly.

Love it!

What a great letter! I don't even want to think about when mine are teenagers (three teenagers at one time-yikes!). But something tells me that if you're raising your sweetie as that letter indicates, you're not going to have any problems (or that, at least, when you do, you'll handle them the right way). ;)

Love the letter. You covered it all and with humour. The pic of your daughter is sweet. She's a real cutie pie. I'm 4 months away from my oldest turning 13. Excited, but not looking forward to stuff. You know.

Visiting via Mama Kat's!
Now a follower too!

Come and vist me ...

Hey, thanks for stopping over at my guest post at The Girl Next Door!

I am having a horrible time imagining my little one as a teen. I was a good kid, I didn't smoke or drink or do drugs.

But I was awful to my parents, particularly my mother.

I know it is inevitable. I know that I am here because my mom didn't raise me to be her BFF. And I love my mom, respect her and admire her.

But at 16?

She was the devil and I was searching for an exorcist.

Dread! Already researching boarding schools...and a sugar daddy.

I love what you said about being THE mother and not THE friend, my 15yo mentioned this to me the other night and wanted to talk about boys, and i felt EEEW, lol! So I told her the same thing. She has friends for a reason.

Nice post! I have exactly the same sentiments. Which I tell my teen everyday.

Great letter! My tweens are a handful. I don't like to think too much about what's going to happen when they hit 16.

I got all teary at the end with the right to kiss you on the head and give you squeezes. It is so hard to think of a day when they won't be cool with that :(

Love this letter!!!
